Yes I get that, but I have tried better earbuds than what Apple gives you and it does sound much better even without the seal. I don't know what it is about these special tips and things, but it's just too uncomfortable to me or they fall out of my ear.

I had a nice set of Sony earbuds that lasted about a year before failing. I was on a trip and bought another pair of cheap Sony's for about 9GBP. They sounded great, but quickly fell apart. So now I'm looking for quality, but still just earbuds.

I don't suppose there exists a shop where you can just try out high end earphones til you find what you like? Does anyone know if such a place exists in LA?
