Just going back 2 years to 2008, I see the following with AA mainline:
- Oct. 2010: AA 1640 loses a 1 ft x 2 ft section of fuselage at 31,000 ft
- Sept. 2010: AA 806 has a large enough engine failure and aborted takeoff to close a runway at PHX
- Dec. 2009: AA 331 skids off runway and breaks into three
- Sept. 2008: AA 286 loses four power buses shutting down systems including: elevator trim, spoilers, thrust reversers, and engine fuel cutoff valves
Just going back 2 years for UA, I found:
- 5/16/2010: UA Boeing 757 had cockpit fire. Diverted to IAD.
- 5/7/2010: UA 747 at SYD experiences tailstrike and returns to SYD after takeoff
- 1/10/2010: UA flight 634, an Airbus A319 lands at EWR with right MLG only partially extended. 3 pax injured.
- 7/20/2009: UA flight 949, a B763 has cockpit fire over Atlantic and diverts to KEF.
- 6/10/2009: UA flight 146, a B752 experiences tailpipe fire in the right engine during startup.
- 10/20/2008: UA flight 1449 an A320 experiences tailstrike on landing with substantial damage to underbelly and aft bulkhead
- 2/25/2008: UA flight 267, an A320 veers off runway on landing on runway 19 at Jackson Hole Wyoming.
- 1/25/2008: UA A320 at EWR experiences multiple avionics and electrical failures requiring return to EWR.
You know what they say about glass houses....
FWIW, I would happily fly UA any day. The number of incidents in relation to the number of flight movements is nearly 0....
