I'm a local and have used it many times...not particularly clean, but it is connected to the subway system, has a direct bus & train to the airport (train to the airport involves a brief coach transfer to the terminal, included in the price) and a local branch of the international rail travel company Wasteels ( www.wasteels.ro ).

Otherwise...there are a couple of ticket vending machines (I believe they accept cards only, you can also purchase domestic tickets online on www.cfrcalatori.ro ) and the staff at the station's international ticket sale counter speaks English.

Be careful of the cabs outside, the ones hanging just next to the exits are usually scammers, look on the side of the car for the published fare "Tarif/km", right now the correct one is about 1.4 lei/km (30 Euro-cents), don't get into one that says 1.99 or 3-3.5, they will not only charge that amount per km, but they will also very likely have a fixed meter, so you'll end up paying 20-30 EUR for a 5 EUR fare.

As a side-note, the Transfagarasan highway is not easily accesible by train (closest stations are 20+km away), so you'll need some sort of car transportation as you approach it, your best bet is to go by train to a popular tourist place like Brasov and rent a car from there...it is also closed in winter (and by winter I mean even up to November-May in some years), so come in mid-summer to be 100% sure you can drive on it.

Hope that helps.
