It depends on your needs and wants.
Gold will get you boarded faster than not being gold.
Gold will get you 25% more miles if you're planning any paid trips next year.
Gold will save you baggage fees on your trips.

Personally i would do it, but I don't know all your needs and wants.
For me, the fun of flying to SF or LA for the day would be worth it and the gold out of it would be bonus.
