A 9 hour flight with a lap child isn't as long as it sounds. And holding a kid for a few hours while they sleep isn't impossible. My wife and I did CMH-ZRH-CMH and CMH-CDG-CMH this year with a 1.5 yr old, 3.5 yr old, and 5 yr old. It goes a lot faster than you think. My wife flew back with the kids from ZRH by herself (While I flew back in Business Class a week later alone

Worst case, raise the armrest and have the little one stretch out over you and your SO.
