On the return, consider the daytime HNL-LAX, stay ovenight again and fly LAX-JFK the next morning.
That's how I used to do OGG-ORD before AA started the non-stop and it's really a lot nicer.
Also, when I did LAX-OGG Saturday, the FA told me that AA is going all 757s to Hawaii out of LAX soon!
