I certainly wasn't aware of or paying attention to hotel promos for most of my travel life. For years I was content when I got a free United miles out of my occasional Hilton stay. Even during my first couple of years on FT I was primarily focussed on airline miles.

That said, the popularity of sites like FatWallet seems to created a lit more awareness of blockbuster promos among the general Internet population.
