Are you sure that they didnt? Qantas offers award bookings/upgrades ( which come out of U too ) 1 year in advance. It is quite possible that they had been made available, but were already booked by the time AA starts bookings

My understanding is that Qantas FF members get a 35 day headstart on award bookings; by the time award inventory is made available to AAdvantage members, many of the most desirable dates have already been scooped up.
