Just some thoughts from someone who "plays the field" (I have a wonky travel schedule for work that includes lots of random places with only one "good" hotel, often from competing chains, so I collect points from all of 'em).

I'm Hilton Hhonors Gold, Starwood Pref. Guest Gold, and Marriott Silver (almost at gold, but not there yet!).

Certainly I have a Hyatt GP number that I use 2-3 times a year, but I would caution you that in my experience there is a lot of inconsistency and variety in terms of quality. For example, I have had both terrible and wonderful stays at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Atlanta (not the same stay, obviously).

The biggest problem I've found, when I was exploring trying to go for an elite level with Hyatt, is that they don't have properties in a lot of places I've been staying. For example, there are some cities where I can find decent Hilton or Marriott options (and to a lesser extent, although this is becoming less of a problem with their expansion of properties, Starwood), but there is no Hyatt. Sometimes the places where there isn't a Hyatt property - I'm not just talking about their top-tier properties, I'm talking ANY property AT ALL - is bizarre.

For example, take the states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, or Montana. There are NO Hyatt properties in any of those states. Yup, the entire states!

I also know, from personal research, there is no Hyatt property in, or near, Syracuse, NY; Buffalo, NY; Ithaca, NY; Rochester, NY; Durham or Chapel Hill, NC/Research Triangle Park (yes there is one in Raleigh, but that's a good 30 minutes by highway away); Athens, GA; Harrisburg, PA; or Albany, NY (but plenty of Marriott, Hilton, & Starwood options in/around all of these cities/states...most of these places are fairly decent sized cities or even state capitols!).
