Your travel dates, mid-may to mid-sept., coincide with peak travel season to Europe. I suspect that AA keeps fares high this far in advance so that it can get a sense of how advance sales are progressing before it decides how low to drop the fares. If advance sales are weak (which I think is likely, given the state of the recovery and the weak dollar), you can expect the fares to drop in the spring.
