Only if you win the miles from AA, where they dutifully apply a value to the "won" miles. At that point, a 1099 appears with your name on it, and yes you do need to report to IRS regarding your winning of the miles.
oh, united will do the same.. i have a 1099 for winning united miles, as do a number of FTers who participated in the elite choice team competition a few years ago.
but yeah, the IRS has declined to get into the game of trying to value ordinary earned miles as income, and i do appreciate that. :-)
