Did you make the original flight booking via the EK website? I always do and select a seat well beforehand, and the system sends you an email confirming the seat request.
Have never let the system choose one for me. Don't like the unpredictability and while not always accurate, I like looking at the seat-map 24-hrs prior to departure to get a feel for the load...
