just because he has never run across this on LH or UA doesn't mean he isn't on the list. I know AA has it automated so if they do pop up you just enter the birthday off the government issued ID and send it off and it clears you if the birthdates don't match. So the passenger is never alerted to it maybe UA and LH have a similar system whereas AC system has to be done manually.
