I wouldn't give up in AA just yet- AA has pretty good availability in general (from the experience of people here, and my personal experience), and the miles don't expire for years, if ever.

HH awards are between 10K and 40K per night (the Point Saver awards, at a 40% discount, have been on hold for a while, but are supposed to be back soon)
