IIRC, just as much lightning (if not more) goes upwards. I think NASA has some spectacular footage of lightning above cloud level, traveling away from the earth's surface. Pretty heavy-duty stuff, too!
Its pretty rare to see visible lightning going up. I've seen it once from huge cells that turned out to be causing significant flooding and sadly many deaths below.
