Once I saw the most beautiful image from my window. It was an evening flight and I saw lightning in the distance the effects where incredible. It went on for a few minutes where the clouds where all lit, incredible.
IIRC, just as much lightning (if not more) goes upwards. I think NASA has some spectacular footage of lightning above cloud level, traveling away from the earth's surface. Pretty heavy-duty stuff, too!
