Miles won't expire until 2 years after the date of the last earned miles.
If you can get $50 gift cards for 5,000, that is a good option. If not, I would also suggest taking the wife and baby on a trip! (or you can hold on to them and credit you 2012 travel to your skymiles account and save up for a "big vacation" in BE)
