Canadian Pacific (CP Air) was originally a subsidiary of the well-known railway of the same name. It was bought by a little-known charter and regional carrier named Pacific Western Airlines (PWA), who were on a competitor-buying binge at the time. Wanting to retain some of CP's recognition and international reputation, but being unable to stomach taking on its identity, they renamed the whole mess "Canadian Airlines International" and retained the CP designation. This started the downward spiral of what was a great airline.
On the upside, because of this I'm an AA customer today.
