I think cancellations due to light load happen most frequently on shorter routes with frequent service where the plane is doing a turnaround. As an example, LGA-ORD is a heavily serviced route, even on Saturdays.

I have been around many times when a lightly booked LGA-ORD or ORD-LGA has been cancelled at the last minute.
