These sound like very sensible suggestions, but I have a concern. The rules are very clear that it should just be clubs, balls, and shoes in the bag, and I am sure it mentions towels explcitly as items *not* to be put in the bag. I guess I can pad with a towel and take it out if told to.

I believe Emirates Gold Course is the one next to Knowledge Village, which would be very handy for me. From what you have written I get the impression that Emirates is pay per play. Is that correct. Also, does it have a range, practice green, etc?
Take the risk with the towel and stick, worst case scenario you have to take them out and trow away (never happend to me btw). it's better then a broken driver.
Also a option to buy a hardcase travelbag.

Easiest way to book the emirates is via dubaigolf.com, you should make a reservation upfront and it's pay per play.

(i prefer Majlis instead of Faldo course btw)

of course they have all the facilities like range, practice greens, carts etc.

have fun!
