Rest of the time, is there areas of Shanghai and Beijing with clean air that I can go once in a while if I get into problems?

I went to könig von ungarn hotel in vienna which has smoking everywhere and even on non smoking floor... i survived though..

i also stay st. regis shanghai and st. regis beijing, those will have non smoking rooms and with so many people that have respect for their health I assume such a great brand will make sure people can have a room without any smoke?

Here in Norway it's getting less and less acceptable to smoke and people is starting becoming aware that it's disrespectful to expose non smokers for secondhand smoke.

will it ever change in China? Can't cancel my trip, but would be nice to know for upcoming trips if I like China...
OK...the summer palace is not outside BJ. You'll be fine in your hotels re: non-smoking room. However, depending on what your health issues actually are, the pollution will be inescapable in the major cities. If it rains, that clears up the air somewhat. Although smoking is fairly ubiquitous, 'in your face' smoking is not that common outside restaurants. If you are super-sensitive, however, wherever you walk, you will be within sight of a smoker.

Smoking will likely decline in China -- in about 20+ years...so here's toast to your long life.
