In the past, some airlines have claimed "largest airline" based on enplanements. However, other airlines have claimed "largest airline" based on passenger seat miles flown, which would give DL and UA/CO an advantage because of their long-haul networks.

Anybody old enough to remember UA's ads back in the 80's -- "We built the largest airline in the free world around you!"???
