The whole body imager is actually better for you as far as not having to go through secondary screening as you would with the Walkthrough Metal Detector because you alarmed it.
I think there are two problems with this strategy.
The first problem is the health risk associated with radiation exposure in the body scanners.
The second problem is that the TSA will do the patdown to "resolve" any "anomalies" in the scanning (as in
Dave Barry's blurry groin"). Some folks here have reported that they have observed 1/3 - 1/2 of passengers in the scanner get patted down anyhow.
In any case, the OP can look at the
sticky about which airports (and which terminals and lanes have the scanners.
