You might be able to leave your bags at one of the hotels close to the Crystal City Metro station. Call around to check. That doubles your Metro fares, but it's right on the way into town.

As for sightseeing, take the Yellow Line to Archives and stroll around from there. Depending on what you want to see (and the weather, etc.) you could wander pretty widely and plan to be at a Metro station for your return trip.
