They can be transferred to someone else's account at the time they would "order" an award. I do believe the only real restriction is that Marriott will only transfer points in increments of 1000 pts, which shouldn't be an issue in your case.

So maybe you have a friend that could use an extra 1K points?

Note that while Marriott does have a rule in their T&Cs about inactive accounts and losing points. But as of the moment (and the past) they haven't been enforcing that rule. So you could just hold onto the points and maybe someday you will get another opportunity to earn more Marriott points.
