Booking Funeral flight with United- questions

As a CO Plat I've been booking online with Co.com for more years than I can recall. But I'm now headed home for a funeral and CO no longer flies to my hometown, or even nearby MKE. So I went on United and saw that they DO fly to MKE. I'll still have a 3 hour drive but it's at least somewhat nearby.

While on United.com I tried to sign in with my CO Plat number and it didn't recognize it. If I'm not going to get miles for this flight, I'm better off with a direct flight on Delta. I know we're all weary of merger questions and after the funeral arrangements I made last night and all day today I am exhausted. Does anyone know if we are earning miles yet on United as CO members or if I should simply forget United and go with Delta? Do I need a new number to be recognized or do I have to book on the phone?

I've already made some calls and found that Bereavement fares on many airlines barely exist anymore. And why doesn't CO still fly from DTW-CLE so we can connect to MKE or my hometown, LSE? I thought the United additions would help in this instance and while I'm not worried about the Elite miles or Upgrades in this case, I would like to know I'm at least earning the miles I pay for.

If this doesn't make sense, forgive me- I need sleep in the worst way. I just need to know how to make this reservation and IF I will earn the miles for my CO account. If not, I can get the direct Delta flight.

Thanks!
