Sorry, the "I can't afford it," line isn't good enough. If you fit one seat, fine. If not, you don't get to usurp someone else's. If I can't afford two hamburgers, do I get to eat half of the stranger's next to me?

I don't think ill of anyone because they're obese. As I said in an earlier post, I judge people by their character, not by the pound. However, it is not tolerance to expect someone to give up part of the seat they paid for, not because the person is obese, but because they are either to self-centered or simply too cheap to consider buying a second seat or making other arrangements.
