I just don't understand why the airlines won't take a really proactive stance on this. They can and should position seat templates in the concourse with signs stating "If you can't fit in one seat, you have to buy two!"
Likewise, if a person is tall enough that they must insist that the person in front of them not lean back, they should have to pay that person some fee, say $50. It should just be an airline policy, in writing.
I don't "blame" the severely overweight or the overtall for their condition (I'm sorta overweight myself). It just is. But everyone should be entitled to 100 percent of the seat they pay for. Not 65 percent, not 135 percent, but 100 percent, free of encroachments from neighbors. Requiring people to buy sufficient seating for themselves is simply not unreasonable. The airlines would make more money by enforcing this rule, and almost everyone would be a lot happier.
