Upgrading with a cat?

Anyone know if the sweeps will upgrade you if you're traveling with an animal or if you have to call in like folks with lap children do? I've been asked to courier my friend's cat out to the west coast after she moves cross-country and need to start planning. I know I should avoid CRJ's due to the restrictions on the size of the carrier, and that I probably won't get a bulkhead, or the exit row on the 321 (or any other plane that doesn't have a seat in front of the exit row seats). Any other tips/pitfalls in traveling on US with a cabin cat? Apologies in advance if he's a howler and you're on my flight.
