1. With no assigned seating, gate lice activity is amplified and you don't know who is waiting around for what.
2. Better be quick if you don't want the FC bulkhead or if you want an exit row in Coach
I think your experience is somewhat of an anomaly. While a line usually does form, I've found that people are generally respectful of letting the FC board first. Overall, I'm a big fan of the open seating and really like that within 5 minutes of de-planing at MAT I'm in a cab zooming back to the office or my apartment.
