Can you simply book the flight on co.com? Then you will have CO flight numbers.
Codeshares may not work for the upgrades. Although you can give it a shot.
Also, if you are upgrading on CO with miles, the only status that counts is CO Elite status. Your UA status may get you an exit row, but will not help for upgrade waitlist priority.
So best advice..buy the ticket with a CO flight number (maybe co.com or expedia, etc); and waitlist for the upgrade ASAP.
