Passport renewal form -- Why do they need my employer?

I'm looking at a DS 82 form that is used to renew a U.S. passport. One of the pages of the DS 82 asks for occupation, employer, additional contact phone numbers, emergency contacts, etc. This seems a bit much to ask for, especially the employer information. Does anyone know if you can leave the answer to these questions blank?

EDIT: Let me rephrase this, I know why the gov't would ask for this information, but I don't want to give them any more information than is necessary. It seems that over the 10-year duration of the passport that this information would become outdated (at least for a good number of people). And... What happens if I change employers? Will I be flagged as suspicious when I give my new employer's name, which doesn't match my passport info??

2d EDIT: Based on the feedback here, I just noticed that there is a substantial difference between the questions asked in the PDF form and the online version. The online version gets into marriage history and parents, where the PDF form does not. It's good to see consistency...
