Yeah but do you really take your passport with you all the time ? I do not, I bring a copy, my USA drivers licence and hotel address card, The passport is in the hotel safe....
I will try and find the story of businessman being asked for papers, it is really only for helping the policemans retirement fund like many things in Thailand !
