I would argue that this is not true backtracking.
Another thing: on the day and time we want to return, the Aeroplan web site does allow YYZ to YOW via a YXU (London, ON) connection - for a total cost of 15,000 Aeroplan miles for a single short-haul return ticket. However, in this case, the Aeroplan call centre says that this too is not a valid routing.
