Not so keen on the 777s myself. I wish they'd bought some more 747s! The Elite cabin is so pokey.. I suppose for Economy, 3-3-3 is more nicer than 2-4-3 though.

The crew have told me they don't like them either - they have to work harder. Once they expand the Elite sections, they'll have to work even harder, I'm sure!

The best improvement EVA could make IMHO is to stop fiddling around with Evergreen Club - especially stop changes that are at short notice or retrospective in nature. It used to be simple - one accumulation rate per class (1x for Economy, 1.25 for Deluxe, 1.5 for Business, 2 for First). One rate for redemption.

It seems every few months there is some further deterioration or increase in complexity announced. Peak periods, increased in redemption requirements, more bands at reduced or zero rate, extra charges for stopovers, certain fare codes ineligible for upgrade at check-in etc. Also priority waitlisting doesn't mean much these days (except for diamonds). There was a time when being priority waitlisted meant that if any seat in the cabin became available, you'd get it. Now they'll happily sell a seat to a newcomer rather than allocate to a gold who is waiting with an existing ticket on a different fare code.

The impression is of an airline that wanted loyalty from it's customers, got it, but is now is panicking around looking for ways to avoid delivering its side of the bargain. I don't really mind what the rules of the game are - but I like to know that the rules aren't being rewritten whilst the game is being played. Anyway I'm drifting off topic.

Silvers used to get priority baggage, they don't any more. I'm sure it's nice for Elite class flyers to get priority now - but it is an indication perhaps of where they are going.

I get the feeling that after the switch from the large Deluxe cabins to the small Elite cabins they realised they could charge a lot more because of availability issues. Perhaps they pushed it a bit far. Anyway they do seem to be "upgrading" the Elite experience. There's now a dedicated Elite check-in at TPE and certainly the food has been improved. I fly all classes with EVA and 2 or 3 years ago Elite food seemed to be little different from Economy albeit with an extra dish. Even the wine went to tetrapaks and was the same as in Economy. Now the food is head and shoulders above Economy (I accept it may depend on station). Also the wine is coming out of proper glass bottles again and with "real" brands (think it was Jacob's Creek last time) and is usually better from the Economy booze. No more "the tasty wine that's fun to share". Priority baggage handling fits in with this. Strange they haven't announced it.
