The swap caused us to go from 11 F seats (+ one crew rest) to 8 F seats. There was wailing and gnashing of teeth, and I overheard a GS in the line waiting to board that he got downgraded as well. My wife's ticket was XF, so that was a safe seat, but my NF seat didn't stand.
I imagine that the downgrades work like upgrades, i.e., based on status and fare paid. I was on a Z ticket, so folks with D/C/J were ahead of me. They did send me an email apology (with out me even asking), refunded my miles, and even sent me 10k miles as compensation.
But at least it was a downgrade from old F to new C! Although I would have preferred the two old F seats we had next to each other, rather than being in separate cabins.
