I've only used Visa and MasterCard, but from Oysters point of view they don't really care. I purchased a couple of Oyster cards for friends when they visited, upon leaving got the deposit + leftover credit paid back in cash. You can put up to £90 on an Oyster at a time.
So roll up to the counter and try your luck. I'm not sure at what amount they'll refuse to do cash refunds on though.
