You book a connection that is safe or within the MCT, yet arrive with enough time to catch an earlier flight. Maybe you're not comfortable with a 50 min connection at ORD in the dead of winter, yet on the day of travel tailwinds are strong and there's not a cloud in the sky. So you standby for the earlier flight.
