Here is another example:
I went on a MR to ANC. We got to ORD @ 4:30am on a Sunday. My flight back to MCI was not scheduled to leave until 8:45am. I went into the RCC, went stand-by, and was able to leave ORD @ 6am..
Without going stand-by, I would have had to wait around ORD until 8:45..
