I see no reason why not, unless the hotel has seen a lot of abuse of checking of luggage, which may have happened at the Embassy Suites and LHR properties mentioned earlier.

I would simply be discreet and not mention where you are staying and have your tip cash clearly visible when you check your bags. If they ask, say something like, "I'm waiting for the rest in my group" or or some nebulous reason.
