More than once, I've cleared standby standing in the jetway when someone else hasn't shown up. In those cases, I was given that person's boarding pass stub and told to sit in the assigned seat. I assume what happens is that after the plane leaves, the gate agent unchecks the no-show and clears me off the standby list, but I always keep my stubs until the miles post.
