IIRC the train is landside, requiring clearance of immigration and customs as well as security. The bus is airside and keeps one within the transit area.

One other note of caution - once you transfer terminals airside, it is not possible to go back or even to exit the terminal. I had a delayed connecting flight last year and was forced to wait in the lounge for several hours although I rather would have gone into London.
