Thanks for the info lhrsfo. The passport must be the trigger, as that reminded me that the process for the online check-in proceeds normally until you enter the passport. After that you get the message that you cant check in. You are right, this seems like a relatively simple fix for IT.

Are there ways to maintain a seat assignment if you can't check in online? I wasn't aware that they starting giving those away unless you arrived late to the airport.
