My experience, at least, runs contrary to above and I needed the middle name.
There is something wrong with your message. The rules say it needs to meet your ID. But what if you ID doesn't have your middle name? And how does the online check-in computer know which ID you are using, since it doesn't even ask? The one with your middle name or the one without?
