I just now had a problem with Secure Flight, though no problem two days ago. My middle name was not in my profile and that prevented me from checking in. (with error message to check in at the airport counter). 20 minutes on the phone with web services identified the missing middle name as the problem. Added it, logged out, logged back in and had no further problems.

My experience, at least, runs contrary to above and I needed the middle name.
