Never on the right, unless you're landing via the Long Island approach, which is rare. Even then, NYC is far away in the distance.
Often times I'll fly in and the plane will do a 180 over the Atlantic, where you'll see New Jersey on the left, the lower NY bay and Manhattan, and of course Coney Island (Brooklyn).
