Not information related - but related to hotels taking passports: I often hand them my old, expired passport. I've never had anyone complain about that before which is great. Though I morally object to having my passport confiscated at any point in time due to it impacting my ability to leave a country, often I'm left with no choice (no passport = no roof over head for the night). One of these days I should get a fake passport (maybe a childrens toy mockup or something) and see if they notice.
