A driver / friend of mine takes people on private tours. I rode along on a JNB trip last year. (Note: there are also minivan and full bus tours). Overall, it was risk-free but history/culture-free too. Total tourist experience. If I really wanted to get anything out of a visit, I'd take a city bus or rent/borrow a bicycle.
