The problem with a soft bag though, is that if they would refuse you cannot have them put it in cargo - chances of damage are 100% in that case.
And the problem with most hard IATA approved cases is that they are so heavy and big that the chances of you being able to bring them on board with you is diminished. You then are almost assured of paying hundreds of euros in extra baggage fees for extra piece and potentially for overweight and overdimension.
