I had a tough weekend. I was out in Denver for a conference and sadly received the news that my Father had died. AA came through and got me on a flight to New York the next morning. I was in the tough position of having to purchase a one-way fare back home to Chicago. I had braced myself for sticker shock. Yes I know about bereavement fares. I decided to check and see if could use miles. I was shocked. I was able to book a MilesaAAver award only 2 days ahead. It saved me a $489 fare. Lesson? It does not hurt to check. I probably benefited from it being a slow Wednesday. When I had to reroute to be there for my father, the AA representative could not have been kinder on the phone. Kudos to them for good customer service under difficult circumstances. I was sincerely appreciative.

too bad chicago is just a few miles over the short hop awards (if available) or it may have been even fewer miles you had to use.
i was in a much less critical situation last summer, and found a first miles saver award one-way, just 4 hours before travel JFK-SFO.
